The Louisville Landscapers Who Learned Their Craft From the Ground Up

Most landscaping companies in Louisville start with a truck and a mower. Bluegrass Gardening started on a family farm in Guatemala, where founder Elber Zepeda spent his early years learning to read soil, care for plants, and work with the seasons. That foundation, combined with formal horticultural training and years of hands-on experience in Louisville, produced a different kind of landscaping company.

Our Approach

Every landscape project begins with understanding how a space is used and how it can evolve over time.

Our work focuses on three principles:

Thoughtful Design

Plant selections and layouts that suit Kentucky’s climate and the architecture of the home.

Quality Installation

Careful planting, proper soil preparation, and attention to detail.

Long-Term Garden Health

Landscapes designed to mature gracefully and remain manageable for homeowners.

Elber's Story

Elber Zepeda didn't choose horticulture. He was born into it.

He grew up on his family's farm in the Guatemalan countryside, where the land wasn't a backdrop or a hobby. It was how the family lived.

From the time he could walk, Elber was learning things that would take most people a university degree to understand.

He learned to read soil by how it felt between his fingers.

He learned which plants would root in shade and which ones needed the full weight of the sun.

He learned that a misplaced crop cost a season, and that the land always told you what it needed if you paid attention.

Those years on the farm gave Elber something he's carried with him ever since. He developed a deep, instinctive respect for how plants, soil, and seasons work together. He doesn't think about landscaping the way most people in this industry do. He thinks about it the way a farmer does, in cycles, in consequences, in what the ground will look like a year from now based on the decisions made today.

After moving to Louisville, Elber pursued formal horticultural training and spent years building hands-on experience in plant health, landscape maintenance, and sustainable garden practices across Kentucky's climate. He founded Bluegrass Gardening four years ago because he wanted to bring that depth of knowledge to homeowners who deserved better than surface-level landscaping from crews who plant and disappear.

Today, Elber leads every project with the same principle he learned on the farm. The land gives you back what you put into it. That belief shapes every recommendation, every plant selection, and every conversation he has with a homeowner about their property.

Our Landscaping and Gardening Ethos

Four ideas guide everything we do. They show up in how we talk to homeowners and plan projects. They shape how we train our crew and how we leave a property when the work is done.

Rooted Knowledge

Elber's understanding of plants, soil, and growing conditions comes from years of agricultural training and hands-on experience. When we recommend a plant, a layout, or a maintenance approach, the advice is grounded in real knowledge. That knowledge started on a working farm and has been refined through years of horticultural training across every Kentucky season.

Long-term Thinking

A landscape that looks finished on day one and falls apart by autumn has failed. We plan for how your property will look and perform in one year, three years, and beyond. That means choosing the right plants for your conditions, preparing the soil properly, and designing layouts that mature gracefully as the seasons pass.

Honest Advice

We'll tell you when a simpler approach will get you a better result. We'll explain why a particular plant belongs in your bed and why another one would struggle. We'll give you an honest estimate and a clear scope before any work begins. Trust is built on honesty, and honesty is built into how this company operates.

Community Pride

Louisville is our home. The team drives past the properties we care for. Every garden bed we plant, every cleanup we complete, and every project we deliver makes our neighborhood a little greener and a little better cared for. That's something we're genuinely proud of, and it shows in the standards we hold ourselves to.

How We Work

Louisville landscaping services get the same structured, careful process on every project, whether it's a single bed renovation or a full property redesign.

It starts with listening. You tell us what you'd like to achieve, what's frustrating you about your current landscape, and what matters most to you about your outdoor space.

Next comes the property walk. The team assesses your soil, light, drainage, existing plantings, and how the landscape connects to your home. This is where Elber's trained eye makes the biggest difference, because he sees things most crews walk straight past.

Then comes the recommendation. You'll receive a clear scope with labor, materials, plant selections, and a timeline. We explain what we've chosen and why, so you can make informed decisions about your property.

Then the crew gets to work. Installation happens with the same care and attention that went into the planning. We treat your property as if it were our own, clean up fully, and don't leave until the result matches what we agreed to.

The relationship doesn't end at the final walkthrough. Many of our homeowners become recurring clients because their landscape keeps growing, and so does their trust in how we care for it. We're a local landscaping company in Louisville, and we're here for the long term.

Our Team

Bluegrass Gardening isn't a one-person operation. Elber leads, but the crew behind him is the reason we can deliver consistent, careful work across every project.

Founder & Manager

Elber is the person you'll speak to first, and he's the person who ensures every project reflects the standards he set when he founded the company. He handles client consultations, landscape assessments, planting design, and project oversight.

Elber’s background spans a childhood on a working farm in Guatemala, formal horticultural training in the United States, and years of hands-on residential landscaping across Louisville and the surrounding areas. He's the reason this company exists, and his knowledge is the foundation everything else is built on.

 Field Crew Lead

Daywin keeps the crew moving and the job site organized. He manages day-to-day field operations, coordinates the sequence of work across multi-area projects, and ensures every section of a property gets the same level of attention.

His work ethic, calm leadership, and years of hands-on experience make him the person the rest of the team looks to when a project gets complex.

Landscape Installer

Kevin brings a calm, methodical approach to every installation project he works on. He handles planting, bed preparation, material placement, and the detail work that separates a professional finish from a rushed one.

His reliability and careful habits make him one of the steadiest members of the crew, and Elber trusts him with the hands-on work that requires patience and precision.

A Solid Team

These are the Louisville landscapers who will be on your property. They're trained, they take pride in their work, and they understand that every garden they plant becomes part of the community they live in.

Professional Certifications

Bluegrass Gardening holds professional certifications that reflect our commitment to proper plant care, responsible installation practices, and ongoing industry education. These credentials are earned through training and assessment, and they keep our work aligned with current horticultural standards.
