Most landscaping companies in Louisville start with a truck and a mower. Bluegrass Gardening started on a family farm in Guatemala, where founder Elber Zepeda spent his early years learning to read soil, care for plants, and work with the seasons. That foundation, combined with formal horticultural training and years of hands-on experience in Louisville, produced a different kind of landscaping company.
Our Beginings
Elber didn't choose horticulture. He was born into it.
He grew up on his family's farm in the Guatemalan countryside, where the land wasn't a backdrop or a hobby. It was how the family lived.
From the time he could walk, Elber was learning things that would take most people a university degree to understand. He learned to read soil by how it felt between his fingers.
He learned which plants would root in shade and which ones needed the full weight of the sun. He learned that a misplaced crop cost a season, and that the land always told you what it needed if you paid attention.
Those years on the farm gave Elber something he's carried with him ever since. He developed a deep, instinctive respect for how plants, soil, and seasons work together. He doesn't think about landscaping the way most people in this industry do.
He thinks about it the way a farmer does, in cycles, in consequences, in what the ground will look like 3 or 5 years from now based on the decisions made today. After moving to Louisville, Elber pursued formal horticultural training and spent years building hands-on experience in plant health, landscape maintenance, and sustainable garden practices.
He founded Bluegrass Gardening in 2021 because he wanted to bring that depth of knowledge to homeowners who deserved better than surface-level landscaping from crews who plant and disappear.
Today, Elber leads every project with the same principle he learned on the farm. The land gives you back what you put into it. That belief shapes every recommendation, every plant selection, and every conversation he has with a homeowner about their property.
