When Maxwell moved into his new home, the landscape did not reflect the level of care seen throughout the neighborhood. The yard was overgrown, lacked structure, and felt disconnected from the surrounding homes. Wanting a cleaner, more uniform appearance, Maxwell reached out through the Bluegrass Gardening website to transform both the front and back yard.

With a background in landscaping, Maxwell came prepared with a clear vision and layout for the space. Bluegrass Gardening worked collaboratively with him, providing expert input on plant placement, material selection, and installation techniques to bring that vision to life. The project included both the front and back yard, with a focus on creating defined planting beds, functional outdoor living space, and long-term durability.

Process and Timeline

Maxwell first reached out in early March, with work beginning in early April. The overall project timeline spanned about one month, largely due to plant sourcing and availability. Once materials were secured, the on-site work was completed in just four days.

Preparation and Planning
Before installation began, some plant substitutions were necessary due to availability. Bluegrass Gardening worked closely with Maxwell to make adjustments while maintaining the integrity of his original design.

Site Preparation
The team began by removing overgrown vegetation and sections of turf to make room for new planting beds. Since the yard previously lacked defined structure, Bluegrass Gardening laid out new bed curves to create a clean, cohesive flow.

Soil preparation included:

Tilling existing soil
Adding compost and manure for organic enrichment
Applying a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer to support healthy plant establishment

Installation Approach
The project was executed with two coordinated teams:

Softscape team focused on planting, mulching, and bed development
Hardscape team handled brick edging, concrete patio installation, and pergola construction

Work began in the front yard, where the majority of shrubs and structured planting areas were located. While the hardscape team installed the brick mower edge and poured the concrete patio, the planting team installed shrubs, trees, and mulch.

As the concrete cured in the back yard, installation transitioned seamlessly into the rear space. The pergola was installed last, completing the outdoor living area.

Materials and Plant Selection

All plant selections were tailored to the specific light conditions of the property. The front yard becomes fully shaded after early afternoon, so shade-tolerant and partial-shade plants were intentionally selected for long-term success.

Key plantings included:

Hostas for reliable shade performance
Azaleas for seasonal color
Oakleaf hydrangeas for structure and adaptability
Pachysandra groundcover around trees for low-maintenance coverage

Pachysandra was used as a practical alternative to grass in non-walkable areas, creating a dense, carpet-like appearance that requires minimal upkeep.

Challenges and Solutions

This project moved smoothly from start to finish. One of the key advantages was working with a homeowner who had prior landscaping experience and a clearly defined vision. Collaboration was straightforward, and decisions were made efficiently.
